Question: Why is the cash drawer not functioning?

Possible Cause: Since the cash drawer is connected to your computer through your receipt printer, a cash drawer issue could indicate a receipt printer issue. Determining the cause of the cash drawer issue is similar to troubleshooting receipt printer issues. Although this article addresses the Star® receipt printer, the principles remain the same for others.

Answer: If the cash drawer is not functioning properly, check the following:

To ensure the printer is powered on, check for a green light on the front of the printer.

Check the connections from the receipt printer to the computer to ensure they are connected and tight.

Ensure there is paper in the receipt printer.

Check that the receipt printer is properly installed.

Ensure the Point of Sale Workstation Preferences are properly set up for the receipt printer:
From the Edit menu, choose Preferences and then select Workstation.
Under Equipment, choose Cash Drawer.
In the Cash Drawer Connection field, select Connected through Star TSP600.
In the Receipt Printer field, select Connected through Star TSP613.
Choose Print Options and ensure that the Star TSP613 Raster Printer is selected as the receipt printer.
Click Save.

Ensure that no other printers have been assigned to local port LPT1:
Click the Microsoft® Windows® Start button, and then choose Run. Type control in the Open field and then click OK.
Double click Printers and Faxes.
For each printer listed perform the following steps:
Right-click the printer and select Properties. Select the Ports tab.
If the printer is assigned to LPT1, change the port to LPT2.
Click Apply and then click OK.
